Romans 15 — Bearing With the Weak
Key Text (ESV): “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” — Romans 15:1
Devotional Thought
Christ is the pattern for Christian strength. He did not live to please Himself, but bore reproach for the good of His people. Therefore, strong believers should use their strength to build others up rather than demand their own way.
Paul also reveals the missionary heart of the gospel. Christ creates one worshiping people from many nations, and His servants gladly labour so that those who have not heard may praise Him. Men should pursue both patient discipleship among believers and courageous gospel advance among the nations.
Expository Focus
1. Strength Serves Others (vv. 1–7)
Endurance and encouragement from Scripture enable believers to live in harmony. Christ’s welcome of us becomes the pattern for welcoming one another.
2. Christ Unites Jew and Gentile (vv. 8–13)
The gospel fulfils God’s promises and creates a people marked by hope, joy, peace, and faith through the Spirit.
3. Gospel Ministry Looks Beyond Comfort (vv. 18–24)
Paul’s ambition was to preach where Christ was not known. The church should cultivate a vision larger than its own convenience.
Questions for Men
- Do I use my strength to serve, or to secure my own preferences?
- How can I participate in Christ’s mission through prayer, giving, hospitality, or witness?
Prayer: Christ, who bore my reproach, teach me to bear with others. Fill me with hope and make me eager to see Your name proclaimed among the nations. Amen.
