Romans 14 — Conscience and Peace

Key Text (ESV): “So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.” — Romans 14:19

Devotional Thought

The church includes believers who differ on disputable matters. Paul commands neither arrogant condemnation nor careless liberty. Each believer stands before the Lord, and every Christian must pursue holiness with a tender conscience and deep concern for the spiritual welfare of others.

Christian maturity is not proved by insisting on every personal right. A strong man willingly limits his liberty when exercising it would wound a weaker brother. The kingdom of God is not centred on food, drink, or personal preference, but on righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Expository Focus

1. Christ Alone Is Lord of His Servants (vv. 1–12)

Believers must not despise or judge one another over matters Scripture leaves free. The Lord will judge His servants.

2. Liberty Must Be Governed by Love (vv. 13–23)

A practice may be lawful yet unloving in a particular setting. Christian liberty must never become a stumbling block.

Questions for Men

  • Am I judging another believer over a matter God has not made central?
  • Where might love require me to surrender a legitimate preference?

Prayer: Lord, make me firm where Scripture is clear and gentle where matters are disputable. Keep my liberty from harming others, and make me a builder of peace. Amen.
