Romans 13 — Love and Holy Readiness

Key Text (ESV): “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” — Romans 13:8

Devotional Thought

The gospel shapes a man’s public conduct. Paul calls believers to submit to governing authorities, fulfill lawful obligations, and love their neighbours. Christian freedom is not permission for disorder or self-indulgence; it is freedom to obey God and seek the good of others.

The urgency of Christian living is intensified by the nearness of Christ’s return. We must cast off works of darkness and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. A man who expects to see Christ lives deliberately, resisting sinful desires instead of making provision for them.

Expository Focus

1. Authority Is Under God’s Providence (vv. 1–7)

Civil authority is not ultimate, and submission does not require obedience to sin. Yet ordinary Christian faithfulness includes respect, lawful obedience, taxes, honour, and responsibility.

2. Love Fulfills God’s Moral Law (vv. 8–10)

Love does not abolish God’s commands. It fulfils their righteous purpose by refusing to harm our neighbour.

3. Wakefulness Produces Holiness (vv. 11–14)

The coming day of salvation summons believers to spiritual alertness. We must put on Christ and make no provision for the flesh.

Questions for Men

  • Do my civic responsibilities reflect honour toward God and neighbour?
  • What sinful provision must I remove instead of continuing to excuse it?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, awaken me from spiritual carelessness. Help me honour rightful authority, love my neighbour, and walk as a son of light. Amen.
