Romans 12 — Living Sacrifices
Key Text (ESV): “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” — Romans 12:1
Devotional Thought
After presenting the gospel’s great doctrines, Paul turns to gospel obedience. God’s mercy calls for whole-life consecration. A Christian man offers his body, mind, gifts, relationships, and work to God—not to earn acceptance, but because he has already received mercy in Christ.
Transformation begins with renewed thinking. Rather than being shaped by the world, believers discern God’s will and serve within Christ’s body. Spiritual maturity is seen not only in what a man knows, but also in how he loves, serves, suffers, and responds to evil.
Expository Focus
1. Consecration Responds to Mercy (vv. 1–2)
Christian obedience is grateful worship, not an attempt to purchase salvation. God’s mercies establish the foundation for holy living.
2. Every Member Has a Place in Christ’s Body (vv. 3–8)
Humility governs spiritual gifts. Men must neither envy another’s calling nor neglect their own responsibility.
3. Love Must Be Genuine (vv. 9–21)
Christian love hates evil, serves others, bears hardship, blesses enemies, and refuses personal vengeance.
Questions for Men
- What part of my life have I withheld from Christ’s lordship?
- How can I practice sincere love toward someone difficult today?
Prayer: Father, by Your mercies make me a living sacrifice. Renew my mind, govern my gifts, and teach me to overcome evil with good. Amen.
