Romans 11 — Mercy and Humility

Key Text (ESV): “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” — Romans 11:36

Devotional Thought

God has not rejected His people. Even when unbelief appears widespread, His purposes remain firm and He preserves a remnant according to grace. Paul explains the mystery of Israel’s partial hardening and the inclusion of the Gentiles, warning believing Gentiles not to become proud.

A man who understands grace cannot boast as though he sustained himself spiritually. He stands only because God has shown mercy. The proper response to God’s wise and sovereign plan is humility, perseverance, and worship.

Expository Focus

1. Grace Preserves a Remnant (vv. 1–6)

God’s faithfulness does not depend on the apparent strength of His people. He preserves His own according to electing grace.

2. Grace Destroys Boasting (vv. 17–24)

The branches stand by faith, not by natural privilege. This leaves no room for arrogance and calls believers to continue in faith and reverence.

3. God’s Wisdom Leads to Worship (vv. 33–36)

Paul responds to God’s unsearchable judgments not with proud speculation, but with adoration: all things are from Him, through Him, and to Him.
