Romans 10 — Righteousness by Faith

Key Text (ESV): “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:17

Devotional Thought

Paul’s desire for Israel is that they might be saved, but sincere religious zeal cannot replace knowledge of God’s righteousness. Israel sought to establish its own righteousness rather than submit to the righteousness God provides in Christ. The gospel announces that Christ is the culmination and goal of the law for everyone who believes.

The message of salvation is not hidden or inaccessible. We confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. Saving faith rests in Christ and openly identifies with Him. Men who have received this gospel are called to hear it, treasure it, and make it known.

Expository Focus

Zeal Must Be Governed by Truth (vv. 1–4)

Religious passion is not enough. We need biblical knowledge that leads us away from self-righteousness and toward Christ’s finished work.

The Gospel Must Be Proclaimed (vv. 8–17)

God ordinarily brings faith through hearing the Word of Christ. Faithful men should therefore speak the gospel clearly and pray that God will use its proclamation to save.

Questions for Men

  • Am I trusting Christ alone, or am I relying on my morality and religious activity?

  • Whom can I serve by clearly explaining the gospel today?

Prayer: Lord, deliver me from self-righteousness. Give me faith in Christ and courage to proclaim His saving Word. Amen.
